New best story on Hacker News: Show HN: Open-source engine running Gemma 4 26B in 2 GB RAM on any M-series Mac

Show HN: Open-source engine running Gemma 4 26B in 2 GB RAM on any M-series Mac 455 by gitpusher42 | 158 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN, I built a specialized inference engine for running 4-bit Gemma 4 26B-A4B-IT on any M-series Mac using about 2 GB of RAM. It is called TurboFieldfare and is written in Swift and Metal. I have always adored on-device AI. It feels like magic that you can run a powerful NN on your Mac or iPhone. So I wanted to push the limits a bit and run a model whose weights don’t fit in memory. The model’s 4-bit quantized weights occupy roughly 14 GB, which makes running it with conventional inference tools almost impossible on an 8 GB or even 16 GB Mac once the OS, applications, and KV cache are included. The trick is to keep the shared part of the model and the KV cache in RAM, then stream only the routed experts needed for each token from SSD. An SSD is way slower than RAM, so the runtime uses a small expert cache and bounded parallel `pread`. While those reads ...

New best story on Hacker News: Show HN: I was tired of opening 2 tabs for every HN link, so I made a userscript

Show HN: I was tired of opening 2 tabs for every HN link, so I made a userscript 400 by twalichiewicz | 111 comments on Hacker News. HN is great for the links people share, but a big part of the value I get comes from reading the discussion around them. I realized I was always opening the article in one tab and the comments in another, constantly switching back and forth. I figured there was probably a simpler way, so I threw together this userscript to merge the two. 1. Clicking a link from Hacker News opens the article with a side panel containing the discussion. It doesn't require your credentials, is resizable, and is easy to tweak if you want to customize it. 2. If you land on an article that has previously been shared on HN, the script finds the existing discussion and adds a button in the top-right to open the panel. Feedback welcome.

New best story on Hacker News: Show HN: Bento - An entire PowerPoint in one HTML file (edit+view+data+collab)

Show HN: Bento - An entire PowerPoint in one HTML file (edit+view+data+collab) 498 by starfallg | 104 comments on Hacker News. Over the past few months, our team has been building more and more slidedecks using web frontend technologies with coding harnesses like Claude Code, but a common complaint is to make even small edits we need to edit the code either manually or via the harness. To avoid this loop, I ended up creating Bento, a single HTML file with everything you need in a slide tool including animations and shared editing. There's no install or cloud login, everything works offline. The default deck is around 560 KB and it doesn't need to fetch anything once you got it. Open it in a browser and then you can edit, present, print and save. Share it via email or via Airdrop and all they need is a browser to edit, present and also do live collab on the slides. Drop it in to Claude or ChatGPT to transform existing pptx files into Bento slides. There is no cloud involved, ...

New best story on Hacker News: Show HN: I replaced a $120k bowling center system with $1,600 in ESP32s

Show HN: I replaced a $120k bowling center system with $1,600 in ESP32s 650 by section33 | 62 comments on Hacker News. I might be the only SRE on Earth with his own bowling center. It's a more in-depth gig than you'd think. My family and I bought an abandoned 8-lane bowling center in the rural mid-west. In our small town there weren't many recreation options for families. You've heard of a food desert? This is an R&R desert. It had been abandoned for a good reason. The roof leaks, the electrical system was constantly surging, and my 70-year-old bowling equipment (still) doesn't work perfectly. The system that keeps your score is particularly interesting to me. It's the thing you watch during your game, but it fades into the background beyond that. Turns out these things are really cool, but absurdly expensive. Ours was installed in 2008 and cost six figures. It's calculating ball speed and trajectory, camera-based pin detection (object detection and t...

New best story on Hacker News: Thanks HN for 15 years of support and helping me find my life's work

Thanks HN for 15 years of support and helping me find my life's work 411 by nicholasjbs | 39 comments on Hacker News. Tomorrow is the 15th anniversary of the first day of the Recurse Center ( https://ift.tt/QIA6z57 ) My cofounders and I did YC all the way back in the Summer of 2010, with the initial idea of building "OkCupid for jobs." That idea quickly fizzled, and we spent the better part of a year pivoting between other ideas that also failed. Finally, we made something that we wanted ourselves: a self-directed programming retreat, where people built fun projects, contributed to open source, and helped each other become better programmers. After running two small batches, we launched on HN[1] and got an incredible reception. That post on HN helped us reach beyond our personal networks and meet programmers from around the world, many of whom have since become friends. HN brought us the majority of people who came to our next few batches, and in the years since, HN ha...

New best story on Hacker News: Claude Code sends 33k tokens before reading the prompt; OpenCode sends 7k

Claude Code sends 33k tokens before reading the prompt; OpenCode sends 7k 299 by systima | 171 comments on Hacker News. This started based off of a hunch. We usually use OpenCode, but were 'forced' to use Claude Code for a while due to issues with Meridian. In that time, we saw the usage meter rise much, much more quickly than when using OpenCode. This was the initial anecdotal evidence, but we undertook this small study to collect empirical data: We added logging between the agentic coding tool (Claude Code and OpenCode) and Anthropic's endpoint, and captured all requests (and the returned usage blocks). With one caveat (toward the end of the post) we found unambiguously that Claude Code was far more inefficient in terms of its cache strategy and its harness token usage than OpenCode.

New best story on Hacker News: Show HN: Getting GLM 5.2 running on my slow computer

Show HN: Getting GLM 5.2 running on my slow computer 719 by vforno | 175 comments on Hacker News. A few days ago I found myself trying out GLM 5.2 and was really positively impressed. The capabilities and security I was getting from this LLM are similar to those I've gotten from models like Claude or GPT, and this really surprised me. But then I thought, "I wonder how it would work on a normal computer like mine," and above all, "I wonder if it would work without going into OOM on a computer like mine." So I started working with the help of agents to test this possibility. I started converting the model to int4, understanding MTP usage, and if possible implementing DSA for long context. How it responds in int4 and whether the quality is maintained or not. Until I got to the point, on my computer with 32GB of RAM, I was able to communicate with GLM 5.2 with times that, of course, aren't high in cold start, but even then, we're talking about 0.1 tok/s, ...
